New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy is a Type 2 Charter School enrolling cadets from Orleans and surrounding parishes who desire to experience a Marine Corps Junior ROTC influenced, college preparatory curriculum. While we believe in a strong academic program, we also take pride in our emphasis on character development, in which athletics can play a major role. Teamwork, pride, and sportsmanship are essential characteristics that our cadets must learn in order to be successful. Our athletic program is a relatively new aspect of our student life, but we have grown tremendously over the last few years. We can, with your help, continue to offer and grow these enriching extracurricular activities for our cadets.
Our wrestling team is only one of these athletic endeavors. We currently have a roster of over 20 cadets from 9th to 12th grade. More than half of the wrestlers participate in the MCJROTC Drill Team and/or our band and choral programs. We are proud in having four new initiates into NOMMA’s chapter of the National Honor Society. By season’s end, we will have competed in 18 competitions ranging from dual meets to tournaments, culminating in a trip to Bossier City’s CenturyLink Center in Mid-February for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state wrestling tournament.
It is a large expense to bring our team to the State Meet. Transportation, rooming, meals, and entrance fees will be approximately $4,000. We have a young team, consisting mostly of sophomores, who have never experienced the state meet. It is our hope to raise enough funds to allow the whole team to attend and compete rather than a select group of upperclassmen. This experience is necessary to continue to grow the sport and improve participation in years to come.
