No More Limits: Dream Chair

Donation protected
Hey everyone!

My name is Matildelis Medina and I am a recent college graduate, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology with future aspirations of going to medical school and becoming a physician. Through out my life, I can say I have always been sure of two things. First, I was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy which is a form of Muscular Dystrophy and that I would always be a wheelchair user. Second and most importantly though, I have always known that this disease would never be enough to stop me from pursuing the life I have always dreamed of.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), is an autosomal recessive and progressive disease in which the motor neurons in the spinal cord are affected therefore resulting in muscle weakness. What this means is that my muscles get weaker over time and I fully depend on others for many activities of daily living. The one piece of equipment that is vital to my life and my independence is my motorized wheelchair.

My motorized wheelchair is essentially the most important thing I own and that aids me to be who I am fully. Because of having my motorized wheelchair, I am able to do things that make me have a better life such as getting an education, going to work, and being able to get around my house as freely as I would like. As amazing as my chair is, I am still very limited by what I can do and where I can go. To be able to travel with my motorized wheelchair is very challenging most times. My wheelchair weighs about 400 pounds and needs special transportation requirements to be able to get to and from places. That means only wheelchair accessible vans and public transportation are capable of transporting this chair. This also includes how limited I am when going to places that are not “wheelchair accessible”. Places that are not wheelchair accessible include just about all types of places that only have stairs and no elevators. Theses are places like stores, restaurants, homes of family and friends, and traveling abroad. I have had incidents where I have tried traveling with my motorized wheelchair only to arrive at my destination and have a broken wheelchair because it is too heavy to be handled with care. Being able to live as close to an independent life and not be so restricted by where I can go is my ultimate dream. I never would have thought there was a solution to my limitations until I discovered the EZ LITE CRUISER.

The EZ LITE CRUISER is a lightweight folding electric power chair that can easily be transported ANYWHERE and by anyone. It is the first of its kind to be a motorized wheelchair that is easily foldable to be able to put in the trunk of a car, carried by anyone as it is only 44 pounds (close to only 10% of what my chair now weighs), and easily able to stow inside an airplane. This is so important to me as I believe that in order to continue to be successful, I need to be able to have access to all places that I will be required to go and travel in order to continue my career and path in the field of medicine and the rest of my life.

It is with great respect that I ask you all, my family and friends for help in being able to purchase this life changing dream chair. My parents and I are unable to afford the cost as we are already responsible for the many costs of my other health needs and medical equipments. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated beyond measure. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask without hesitation.
