Nolan Elementary Sidewalk

My name is Ethan Fell, and I'm a sophomore at Signal Mountain Middle High School, as well as a local Boy Scout. For the past several months, I have been working toward the highest ranking the Boy Scouts offer, Eagle Scout. To reach this goal, I am required to complete a service project for my community. While I was coming up with ideas for the project, I took notice that every morning and afternoon, several families cross an extremely busy road in my town and walk through ditches, mud, and dirt to get their children to and from the local elementary school. Not only this, but the paths they use are dangerously close to the road. I decided that for my project I would facilitate the building of a sidewalk between that busy road, Shackleford Ridge, and Nolan Elementary School.
Through my early research, I discovered that up to this point many individuals have lobbied for a sidewalk in this area. I also found that the path for a potential sidewalk carries across Hamilton County Department of Education and town properties, leaving the project without a unified plan and leader. Hoping to be that person, I explored barriers and opportunities.
Since then, I've worked with Nolan Elementary School, the Town of Signal Mountain, and Hamilton County to work towards the best way to place a sidewalk. I am also working with David Atkinson of Signal Mountain Tree and Dirt Services, Bill Long of TNT Concrete, and Gary McKinney of McKinney Underground LLC on all construction elements. We now hope, funds providing, that the sidewalk will be built the weekend of September 22-24, 2017.
