Noelle's traumatic burn recovery

Donation protected
On May 9th, 2017 my friend Noelle was transferring a stock pot of  boiling water from the stove to the countertop when the pot tipped over, spilling scalding water down both her legs. Noelle went into shock and luckily her brother was over for dinner and called an ambulance. The ride to the hospital was excruciating as the only thing paramedics could do to lessen Noelle's discomfort was to continuously pour saline solution over her legs to cool the burning skin.  Once they arrived at the hospital, the diagnosis was second and third degree (full thickness) thermal burns to 30 percent of her body.

Below is a picture of Noelle's right leg.  Both legs were affected.

Recovery and healing stages

Since Noelle was discharged from the hospital, she has undergone extensive recovery with the help of a burn specialist and burn physical therapist in London, ON. This has been a very painful experience and will be ongoing for the next year.

Full thickness burns are very deep, and have damaged tissue below the sweat glands, nerve endings and hair follicles.  Unfortunately, Noelle's group benefits plan does not cover many of the costs related to traumatic burn recovery.

This account has been set up to help lower the cost of Noelle's recovery process.  In addition to myofascial release therapy,  a local Laser Specialist and Key Opinion Leader on Scar revision (Don Conant) has recently begun treatment with fractional ablative laser to reduce pain and puritis (severe itchiness), improve elasticity and promote healing of resistant ulcerations. Due to the severity of Noelle's burns, she will require 20 - 25 laser treatments over the next year and 52  or more MFR sessions.

The home care nurses that visited Noelle daily for the first 3 months noted how amazed they were with Noelle's optimism and resilience, as many burn victims find it difficult to stay positive while undergoing the excruciating healing process. This is the Noelle I know and love. She always looks at the brighter side of things and would much rather listen to a friends problems than talk about her own. She is such a cheerful, bubbly, caring soul with a heart of gold. Let's show her our support during this challenging time.

 Noelle (always smiling).
