No Ceilings Scholarship

Four students--Dobbie Herrion, Wendy (Tillmon) DuCasse, Tameka (Jones) Herrion, and Robert White III-- emerged upon the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in the fall of 1998.  During their time at Southeast, these students were very active in numerous campus activities and organizations and played an active role in the evolution of the Minority Mentor Program (MMP).  Each would graduate from the University, becoming a part of the first FULL class of MMP mentees to cycle through the program and graduate.  These students could not have done so without the efforts and work of those who came before them.  The support, guidance, and mentoring from faculty, staff, and peers, made it possible for the four bright minded leaders to leave a positive legacy of leadership and scholarship Southeast Missouri State University.

Motivated the concept of paying it forward, these alumni created the No Ceilings Scholarship.  The No Ceilings Scholarship is a collaborative effort between Neighborhood Nets and Education Access Programs at Southeast Missouri State University.  The No Ceilings Scholarship will be awarded to a promising student who is a participant in the Minority Mentor Program. These funds, along with positive mentoring and leadership opportunities provided through the Minority Mentor Program, will aid the student in turning academic dreams into a reality.

The Concept of No Ceilings

The meaning behind the name of this scholarship, the No Ceilings Scholarship, is two-fold:  it refers to both a physical place and philosophical approach to life. The initial space for the Office of Minority Student Programs was located on the second floor of the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University.  This office was modest in physical space and provided students of color a hub for resources, professional support, friendship, and social interaction.  The office, while not very lavish or spacious, provided students with a place to grow and develop academically, mentally, and socially.  One of the visible differences between this office space and others was the literal absence of a roof.  What the space lacked in the form of an enclosed, large office space, it made for with an abundance of love, caring, sharing, compassion, and friendship

In terms of the approach to life, No Ceilings represents infinite potential.  The scholarship's founders embrace the mindset that everyone is capable of removing and overcoming barriers that may pose a threat to our goals.  Further, holistic growth and development, academic perseverance and excellence, and scholarship through service are achievable when each student embraces the concept of No Ceilings--as these alumni have.
