No Kill Pet Rabbit Rescue Facing Imminent Closure

Rabbit Run-Away Orphanage is facing imminent closure, due to the increased number of rabbits and in turn mounting vet bills.
It is 2019 and our 10 year anniversary and we are facing the worst year of dumped and abandoned pets to date, and we are struggling to stay open. Over the holidays we have had an unusually high number of animals present at our doors. We need to continue to raise funds to cover vet care for the year. We are a completely volunteer run rescue and all donations go to the care of the rabbits.
Meet Cuddles, one of our special needs rabbits. Without our intervention she would be euthanized. Our charity was the first dedicated no-kill pet rabbit rescue in Victoria, that takes in rabbits like Cuddles.
The demands for our services is unprecedented, with several prominent animal shelters, council pounds and vet clinics throughout the state seeking assistance from us to rehome their rabbits. We also have people calling us to catch dumped pet rabbits and once caught they also come into our care.
Did you know that pet rabbits are not covered under the Domestic Animal Management Act 1994 in Australia? This means that our council pounds are not obligated to take in the pet rabbit.
In the last 8 weeks we have taken in 49 rabbits. The surgery costs as well as managing the vet care for more than 250 rabbits in our permanent foster program has become overwhelming. Our September/October Newsletter documents this latest intake, where the rabbits came from and the associated costs to us. We also turn away just as many rabbits as we take in.
There are no good options for these dismissed pets if we close our rescue. While we can provide the love and care and rehoming for these pet rabbits, your help is needed to help us cover the funds needed for their vet care. All donations are tax deductible.
