Hello Everyone,
My name is Rosin Hem. I recently joined the YMCA Cambodia Project to help raise money for the children who are living in the streets and poorest slums of Cambodia. The program will provide a day camp for 100 street kids from the YMCA Street Children's School. It will gaurantee them at least 1 meal a day, sports supplies, clothing, school supplies, and monetary donations.
I would like to share with you all a little bit of my history, so you understand why this project means so much to me. I am of Cambodian/ Chinese decent, living in America. My parents are survivors of the Khmer Rouge Genocide that lasted between 1975-1979. During this time, approximately 2 million people (1/3 of the population) were killed, tortured, slave driven or starved to death. My parents did whatever it took just to survive and fled the killing fields just in time to give birth to me in a refugee camp in Thailand. Because of malnutrition, I barely survived, but miraculously I did. A lot of my extended family weren't as fortunate.
I went to Cambodia with my family for the 1st time in 2008, to try and find the remains of my grandparents who died during the killing fields and reunite with long lost family members. That trip was one of the most humbling experience of my life and it changed me forever. It's been about 35 years since the Khmer Rouge Regime ended, but the country is still struggling to recover. It's one of the poorest countries in the world. While I was there I saw children, as young as 3 yrs old, on the streets begging for money or working hard in order to help support their parents. These kids deserve a childhood and a real education.
Most Cambodians are here in America now because of the atrocities that took place back home. My family were fortunate enough to be sponsored here in order to create a better life. I can't help but feel the need to give back to the less fortunate and stay connected to my roots. This project is the best way I know how to give back, so please help me, so I can help these kids.

**All the committed indivduals from the YMCA Cambodia Project, including myself, will be engaging in tons of fundraising activities in order to procure enough funds to keep this program thriving. We will also travel to Cambodia in August to volunteer our time. Please let me now if anyone is interested in helping out in any way possible.
