<div>An incredible student of mine at UWC-USA, Luis Lau from Guatemala, is currently facing two medical emergencies in his family. Luis´ 14-year-old brother suffered peritonitis due to appendicitis. He is in intensive care at the hospital back home in Guatemala due to various complications in his recovery.
</div>
<div>It all started when in late May Luis´ family experienced a medical crisis with his younger sister due to “chikungunya”, a disease transmitted by mosquito bites. The illness led to his sister being hospitalized and highly affecting her mobility; fortunately, she has since been discharged and is slowly recovering at home. Luis´ little brother (Mateo Javier Lau) was very stressed by his sister's situation as she was unable to walk normally as she was recovering. In the midst of this crisis, Mateo began to feel discomfort in his stomach due to appendicitis. Not knowing what the cause was, he decided to endure the symptoms and pain thinking it would go away in order to avoid further worrying his parents until he couldn’t handle it anymore. After a week of pain, he was hospitalized due to peritoniti. Mateo is a very noble and kind person, his whole family is moved by how he decided to ignore his own symptoms and stepped up to take care of his little sister, even though this ended up completely destroying his health. Unfortunately, the health care system in Guatemala is not good and the combination of these two medical emergencies is creating an exorbitant cost that Luis´ parents are unable to afford, specially as Luis is preparing to return to finish his last year of highschool at UWC-USA. Luis, his family and I will greatly appreciate any support your are able to contribute with.
