Nkhoma Hospital, Malawi - Volunteer

Who I am.

For those of you who know me, you know I am most passionate about serving people. Although I am currently a full-time student at UBC's Okanagan campus studying clinical exercise physiology, I plan on completing my degree, studying medicine either in Canada or abroad, and then working full time as a humanitarian physician. Since my first humanitarian trip in 2011, I knew that this is what I would end up doing in some capacity or another. I have seen the tremendous impact upon peoples lives that exists when both a vast knowledge and a kind heart are within the same person. I hope, through experiences such as this, to one day become that person.

Where am I going and what will I be doing?

For the month of June, I will be revisiting the township of Nkhoma in a beautiful country called Malawi. I was fortunate enough to be able to go to Nkhoma last summer between semesters and volunteer and although I was able to gain some hands-on medical experience, this summer I will be doing far more in the hospital in Nkhoma.

Dr. Sam Kabota, the doctor in charge of student learning at the hospital, has allowed me to design my own program for the time I am there. While there, I will be spending about 3 days in each of; surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, communicable diseases, and internal medicine. This incredible opportunity will allow me to learn a diverse range of skills that I will hopefully be able to put into practice one day.

Why I need your help.

As many of you know being a student is not the most profitable occupation. Although I am working part time as a care aid to individuals with diverse needs, and have also found work as a research assistant within the University, the income from these positions will not be enough to cover the trip. The cost of airfare is typically between 1700-2300 dollars. If I am able to fundraise 1500 dollars I will be able to budget the rest.

Trips like this have played a critical role in the development of my goals. It is because of the generous assistance of individuals in my community that has enabled me to go on these humanitarian trips and essentially help shape who I am becoming.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

I hope you decide to partner with me.

Sincerely,

Gabriel Ursus Dix
