My son Jack age 15 was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia in July 2012, received treatment October 2012 and is getting continuous support. Finding out that Jack had Aplastic Anaemia was a terrifying time for us both, not knowing what was ahead of us. The support we received from both the children's haematology unit and NICFC was unforgettably amazing. When you discover your child is gravely ill you can feel very alone in the world. Without the care and support both my son and I received I don't know where we would be. Words can never explain how grateful we are. In an ideal world I wish it was possible to repay each and every one who helped us through this journey, but you could never put a price on this amazing work. Everyone individually had a major role in our journey and with the special words and actions helped us get through the hard times and make memories we can treasure.
I have decided to set up a fundraising appeal called 'The JDW fund' (Jack Dolan Wilson). Through this I hope to raise funds for both NICFC and The Children's Cancer Unit Charity so that they can continue to help both the children and their families. Through the JDW fund I hope to raise awareness of Aplastic Anaemia as this condition is quite rare and not everyone understands it. I also hope to get the opportunity to work alongside NI blood transfusion groups so I can help encourage people to donate blood and Platlets and also spread information about how to become a bone marrow donor.
This is my way of giving something back, to show how much myself and Jack appreciate everything that has been done and the support we continue to receive. We hope that this will ultimately benefit other families like ours who have a child with bone marrow failure, blood disorders and cancer.
The Children's Cancer Unit Charity exists solely to support the work of the Children’s Cancer Unit at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and their families. Medical and nursing services are provided at the Fund’s dedicated unit in the eight-bed Children’s Haematology Unit at the Hospital, together with a team of three consultants, 17 nurses, a community liaison worker, two social workers and laboratory staff in caring for children and young people." The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children understands that childhood cancer affects families in many different ways. Our aim is to ensure that each family member receives the support which works best for them.
