Increase Global Access to HPM

This year, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) received more than 100 compelling and powerful scholarship applications for support from physicians treating patients living with life limiting illnesses and receiving hospice care. Unfortunately, with funds on hand, we were only able to support 10 scholars. Our hope is that with your support – we can increase that number!

Make a donation today and create new possibilities for extending palliative care to patients and families in developing countries throughout the world. 

Each scholarship of $5,000 provides travel funding, registration fees, invaluable education and networking opportunities to each selected professional.  Over the past 5 years, more than 32 individuals have benefited from AAHPM Developing Countries Scholarship. Each year, we hear stories like these that remind us how powerful and inspiring this experience is for our scholars.

Aleiya Virgo-Herron, MBBS, resides and practices medicine in Kingston, Jamaica. Here’s what she shared following the 2015 AAHPM HPNA Annual Assembly where she was the recipient of a scholarship:

"There is nothing like learning, sharing and encouragement from others who are in similar situations. When I met the wonderful 2015 scholarship group, they gave me hope for my institution back home. I felt that if others are being innovative then I too could do small things, make little changes and lobby harder. And, I have started to do all those things. I have also tried to mentor others, so that if they are interested they start out earlier, with more information and support than I had.

The scholarship also improved me as a person. Other winners gave me courage to pursue higher degrees, something I wasn't sure about. Their excitement and passion became mine too. 

I am still carrying that new enthusiasm with me and am so glad for the opportunity provided by the AAHPM."
