I was recently hospitalized after being extremely ill for about a week at the beginning of December. Not being able to keep anything down I finally went in to the ER where I was kept for three days and diagnosed with Pancreatitis and DKA. Pancreatitis is an inflamation of the pancreas. It can be onset (happen suddenly) or mounting (occurring after several years). They are not sure what caused this, even after running several tests at the hospital, and I have to go see a specialist now, that  I have been putting off because I cannot afford to go see them. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening condition that develops when cells in the body are unable to get the sugar (glucose) they need for energy because there is not enough insulin. When the sugar cannot get into the cells, it stays in the blood. The kidneys filter some of the sugar from the blood and remove it from the body through urine. Because the cells cannot receive sugar for energy, the body begins to break down fat and muscle for energy. When this happens, ketones, or fatty acids, are produced and enter the bloodstream, causing the chemical imbalance (metabolic acidosis) called diabetic ketoacidosis. It got so bad that I was vomiting up acid. I am currently taking something to coat my stomach so that that stops happening. I have been able to cover my medication thus far, but since I had to take some time off from work and used up all of my vacation time things are getting tight. I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 5 and have been dealing with it for most of my life. I have been seeing a regular doctor who is good with diabetics and most of the time it is manageable, but what with having broken my foot and just recently recovering from that, I am falling behind on my medical bills. I am already 2,000 in the hole and they keep adding up. She is recommending that I see an endocrinologist until I get my A1C (a blood test that provides information about a person’s average blood sugar, over the past 3 months) down, which I also cannot afford. I hate having to ask for help and am not even sure how to do this gofundme thing. But I really need help, so I'm trying it out. I've seen it work. If you would like to help in other ways, I am willing to accept anything at this point.
