Nina Thomas, Future SE Teacher

Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved learning and wanted to help everyone else love learning, too. She didn't have much money, but that didn't stop her. She learned three-and-a-half languages, finished high school in the top 10% of her class, and was an English teacher for a few years in Brazil. When the girl grew up, she became me!
I still love learning, and my college track record shows it. I graduated from Harper College with a 4.0 GPA and as a member of the Phi Theta Kappa international honors society. I was also awarded a full-tuition scholarship by the Harper College Honors Program to complete my bachelor's degree at Elmhurst College.
As my studies progressed, I chose to prepare to work with those for whom learning can be most difficult because of special needs. I have volunteered with the NorthWest Special Recreation Association (www.nwsra.org) for two years, and with the Special Friends ministry at Willow Creek Community Church (https://www.willowcreek.org/en/connect/ministries/special-friends/south-barrington) for almost a year, where I am now a Sunday school teacher. So I was very excited to find out that I can complete my degree in special education at Elmhurst College.
And after that? I have found that the possibilities are endless. I want to work with students in the classroom, but there is more that I can be involved in. I want to participate in research to develop new methods and materials for special education. I also want to study special education in countries around the world, particularly to compare the structures and approaches for it in first-world and third-world countries. Ultimately, I want to help students with special needs who live in communities with limited resources to have increased access to a quality education. The first step to all of this is getting my degree, and I am committed to making the most of the opportunity I have received.
Classes start in August, and I am registered and ready to start. While most of my college costs are taken care of, I am still going after the money for living expenses and fees for the next semester. I have been saving and applying to  scholarships, and was recently awarded one that will take care of my book expenses. I am also reaching out to my network of friends and family with the opportunity to be a part of this exciting story. My three main costs are:
- On-campus living
- Parking fees
- Moving expenses
Your contributions will symbolize an endorsement of my goals, your faith that I can achieve them and the care of people I hold in high esteem. So give what you can and spread the word! Any and all donations are welcome!
Thank you for reading and considering my request.
