Auryn Phelan is our 6-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in 2019.
Over the last year, Auryn has responded really well to treatment through 13 rounds of chemotherapy, two major surgeries, two stem cell transplants, 14 rounds of radiotherapy and multiple bone marrow aspirates, blood transfusions, and other medical procedures. He is now going through the last stage of treatment - immunotherapy - until the end of 2020.
Unfortunately, despite the great progress made, Stage 4 Neuroblastoma has an extremely high relapse rate and very little treatment options if relapse occurs. Sadly, this results in low survival rates.
There is a clinical trial for a vaccine that helps prevent relapse in children with Neuroblastoma in the Slone Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York. This vaccine is not available in Ireland, so the only option for Auryn is to travel overseas. The vaccine has had very promising Phase 1 results and Auryn's parents have set up a fundraising campaign so that he can get the treatment he needs.
