A Safe Home for the Cats & Dogs of Bira

We have managed to accumulate a lot of poor kittens and puppies over the ten months we've been staying in Bira, South Sulawesi. Some we found in the garbage on the side of the road, some have been brought to us. All starving, sick and on deaths door. We do what we can for all of them as there are no vets, no rescue centres and very little regard for these animals at all. But it all comes at a price. So we would love to be able to build a home for them where they will be safe, where they can play, be fed and watered and get all the love they deserve.

It's dangerous in the village for stray dogs. They are feared and thought to be dirty by many of the traditional locals. One puppy, Rocky, was brought to us at four days old as his mother had been murdered and left with all the puppies around her.

The stray cats are a pest to the locals as the population and breeding is out control. We have 9 currently, all loveable, beautiful and happy. Yesterday our beloved Custard, the newest member of our pack died in an unfortunate accident. He fell off the balcony of our home as he was playing.

We think it's time we do this properly and put more attention and focus in to their surroundings. With the help from fellow animal lovers we'd like to build a modest shelter for our cats Medusa, Warrior, Princess, Anita, Alien, Andrew, Raggy, Blister and Foxy. And our dogs Django and Rocky and hopefully we can be there for any more waifs, strays and orphans that need our help!
