Hello everyone. Nicole is our 22 year old daughter who is a college student at Northern Michigan University in Marquette Michigan.
Her story began when she did not feel well for the first 2 weeks of June. The smallest activity made her tired then exhausted, weak, nauseated and gave her a constant headache. The customers at her job told her she was very pale and didn't look right. She became scared. She drove herself to the local hospital where her blood test revealed a hemoglobin of 4 (normal is around 15). Subsequently she was immediately admitted to the hospital for further testing. She recieved blood along with many other blood tests and a painful bone marrow test for a diagnosis of the rare blood cancer Acute Myeloid Leukemia on June 15.
Our heads are still spinning because this all happened unexpectantly, suddenly and so fast to an otherwise healthy person.
Three days later, Nicole was discharged so we could begin a 3 day 1300 mile trek back to Virginia. There she would be admitted to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk. The trip was difficult and caused further exhaustion and difficulty that we needed to stop at a hospital ER in Winchester, VA 5 hours from our home.
The next morning we continued toward Norfolk, Virginia. When we arrived in the afternoon, Nicole was immediately taken in and confirmation testing began. After many painful spinal taps and bone marrow testing, the diagnosis was confirmed and treatment has begun.
This is all so new to us. We are grateful for the prayers and financial support you give. As updates become available, we will pass them along.
