Nursing School Fundraiser

Donazione protetta
My name is Nickie and I am the co-founder of Cornerstone Doula Trainings.  My next major career move is to become a nurse practitioner within 4 years. I have been working with underserved populations as an outreach worker for over 10 years prior, and I know that caring for others is my true calling. However, in order to meet the needs of my family and continue to reside in the Bay Area, my current income is unsustainable. To be able to continue on this school path, it is imperative that I scale down on work and devote myself completely to my studies. Otherwise, it may take me up to 10 years to meet this goal.

So far, I’ve kept a 4.0 GPA while working full time, as well as being a single mother and now that my classes are completely focused in science and take a lot of study time, I won’t be able to work like have been. I’m hoping to drop my work schedule down to one day a week, so I can completely focus on my studies and my daughter. If I keep my straight A average, I will be able to get a scholarship moving forward to University in one year’s time.
If I am able to get my degree, I will be the first college graduate in my immediate family.

** Update I am transferring to Mills in the Fall and have recieved an 80% of my tuition is scholarshis and grants!

The plan:
Starting Fall, 2015 at Mills College with a cohort of 18, I am going to be in one of the top Nursing programs in the Bay Area!!

Once I receive my BSN, I will be a great candidate for UCSF or Merrit for a masters in nursing with my stellar GPA, as well as over 10 years of front lines direct service to homeless youth, 14 years practicing as a doula in hospitals and 9 years of training doulas. I have extensive volunteering history, and know that I have exactly what it takes to get into any grad program that I set my sights to.

The classes I have left:
I have two semesters at Mills, then 2 semesters at Merritt.  Fall 2015 classes: Microbiology for Nurses, Chem/Nutrition for Nurses, Philosophy, and History of Western Art.

The financial need:
I have calculated the amount $10,000 to fill the gap between my small business income and school grants.  I will need to bring in $2000/month just to cover rent, bills and living expenses every month. If I can raise any part of this amount, it will afford me more study time, which in turn will allow me to keep up my 4.0 GPA.

My costs:
Tuition is 80% covered by scholarshiops and grants, so I need to cover the remaining $9,000 in tuition with student loans.
Books and supplies per semester: $1,500
Rent: $1,000/month
Car and insurance: $420/month
Utilities: $150/month
Phone: $110/month
Food: $200/month
Total: $1880/ month just for rent, food, and bills, not including my school supplies and the commute from SF to Oakland.  $2000/month gives a small amount of padding for anything that may come up for myself or Violette, such as gas or other expenses.

I’m doing this fundraiser for the 2015-2016 school year (three semesters) and will continue on to Samuel Merritt University with as many scholarships I can find, as well as loans to fill in the gaps.

Thank you for your consideration, and I truly am grateful for all of your support.
