Nicholas Herringer 14,a freshman at Hastings High School started complaining about severe headaches and extreme fatigue on January 12th 2015. After several doctor appointments and a diagnosis of migraine headaches, Nick was put on a steroid to help with the painful headaches and the rash that developed on the left side of his face. Once Nick had finished taking the steroid, his symptoms would return almost instantly. On January 31st Nick started throwing up nonstop for hours. We were sent to Mary Lanning Hospital for some blood tests. We then returned home with nausea pills and pain meds. Nicks condition worsened and we headed back to the ER at MLMH, where they started him on an IV for dehydration. After running a CT scan on Nick, the ER doctor told us that our son has a mass on his brain the size of an orange and they were sending us by ambulance to UNMC in Omaha. Nick was placed in the ICU for monitoring. The next morning they did an MRI and diagnosed Nick with pilocytic astrocytoma. Nick had a craniotomy on February 2nd during which the surgeon was able to remove the nugget size tumor and the entire cyst wall . Nick was released from the hospital on Thursday February 5th. Now we wait for results from pathology to determine if further treatment is needed. On Thursday Feb. 12th we received a call from our neurosurgeon to inform us that the pathology report showed that Nick has grade 4 Glioblastoma. He told us that this type of cancer is more common in adults than in children. He labeled Nicks cancer as a grade 4 because it is a very aggressive cancer and treatment would need to start right away. On Tuesday Feb. 24th we went to Children's Hospital in Omaha to meet with Dr. Abromawitch ( a brain tumor specialist ) to set up a treatment plan. She told us Nick will need 5 weeks of radiation (Mon - Fri ) and start chemo right away. On Thursday Feb 26th we returned to Omaha to meet with Dr. Lin a radiation and oncology specialist. She determined that Nick will need 6 1/2 weeks of radiation along with chemo. They did a CT scan and fit Nick for his radiation mask .While we were there we also met with the teacher who is working at the hospital to keep Nick on track with his studies. On Monday March 2 we returned to UNMC for an MRI. We will meet with Dr. Lin on Wednesday to discuss the results of the MRI and discuss the treatment plan. As of now radiation and chemo is suppose to start on Thursday March 5th. Please pray that the MRI results would come back good and for Nick as he starts this treatment. Thank-you so much to all our family and friends for their love and support during this difficult time.
