Nick & Nichole- Help Start Our Family with IVF

Donation protected
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to visit our GoFundMe page. We are Nick & Nichole Powell, a newlywed couple excited to start our family. Unfortunately, due to an extremely rare condition, we are unable to have a child using traditional methods. So, we are seeking your support to make our dream of having a child (aptly named our “Science Baby”) a reality.

Our Story

Nearly 15 years ago, we met in college at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. After a couple of months of flirting and Nick trying a little too hard, Nichole succumbed to his charm, and we began dating. We moved to Oregon and started our life together. Jumping ahead, through a few ups and downs and ins and outs, we made it official and got married in October of 2022 in front of our closest friends and family.

With a long history, talking about our future family came naturally. Nichole, a nanny, comes from a rather large Midwestern family. They know if a baby is in the room, that’s where you will find her. Becoming a mother is something Nichole has dreamed about since she was a kid. Her diagnosis was utterly devastating…but that hasn’t stopped her. We began looking at our options right away. Nick, a business analyst, is a kid at heart. Having his family close by, adding a baby Powell to the bunch is something he knew we desperately wanted. Imagining what our life could look like with a child, Nick cannot wait to have a little version of himself playing games, watching movies, and cheering for the Portland Trail Blazers beside him. We know we are meant to become parents; we just didn’t know how much we would struggle to achieve that future.

Why IVF?

Nichole was born with a rare condition that prevents her from carrying a child. Due to this, the only way we can have a biological child is to go through IVF with a surrogate gestational carrier. This means that we must go through the following steps to have a child:

  • Nichole needs to take medicines and hormone injections ahead of egg retrieval
  • Nichole must undergo a procedure to retrieve the healthy eggs
  • Nick must provide a sample to create healthy embryos
  • All genetic materials are tested and vetted for fitness and viability
  • Embryos are created and then frozen
  • Once a surrogate is determined, the embryos must be implanted into a surrogate

While the science involved with the process is exciting, it is also incredibly overwhelming…financially, emotionally, and physically. We are eternally grateful that there is even an opportunity to have biological children, but the process is incredibly extensive.

Our Request

We're reaching out to our friends, family, and kind-hearted individuals like you who are willing to support our journey to parenthood. Sadly, Nick’s long-time employer refuses to cover any sort of fertility treatment within its offered benefits. This means that our entire path to becoming parents is without any type of assistance and completely out-of-pocket. The costs add up quickly and contribute greatly to the entire ordeal. We were provided with the following estimates from our fertility specialist.

  • Pre-cycle costs, including imaging, testing, medicines, and injections: $5,800
  • Egg retrieval, further testing, embryo creation, freezing, ONE transfer, and storage: $24,000
  • Gestational Carrier (Surrogate) fees can range between $30,000-$80,000

This can total upwards of $125,000. As you can imagine, any amount you can contribute will make a significant difference in helping us achieve our dream. Having support in any way is incredibly helpful and knowing there are people out there who might know what we are going through or are just moved by our story, is a beautiful thing. Even if you are unable to donate, simply sending good vibes or sharing this page can go a long way!

Conclusion

Becoming parents is a dream we’ve shared for a long time. Anything you can do to help us achieve this dream will mean the world to us. We plan to pay it forward, not only by being open and loving parents but by helping anyone else who might be going through the same thing. Struggling with infertility sometimes feels like an invisible battle. You can’t always see what is under the surface when it comes to having children. It’s important to feel seen and supported. We now understand and plan on helping wherever we can moving forward.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about our story and contributing to our cause. We love every one of you and do not take your generosity without the sincerest gratitude.

With all our love,

Nick & Nichole
