Support Beekeepers in Nicaragua

Tax deductible

In January of 2013, I moved to Nicaragua to become the Assistant Beekeeper at Nuevas Esperanzas. I worked and learned alongside our community members to establish a beekeepers cooperative of 12 members spanning four communities. My heart swells to say that today our cooperative has more than quadrupled its size in just 5 years.

Beekeeping provides our community members with a supplementary income during the summer months, when their crops have been harvested, the soil is dry, and there’s little to bring to market. This project has helped so many individuals and families attain more economic independence, and all of the money raised will go directly to helping our beekeepers expand their apiaries, as well as provide the opportunity to community members who are interested in starting their own.

In February of 2017, I was asked to join the team officially as a US board member, and I couldn't be more proud. I am hoping to raise $3,000 or more by the middle of April 2018, but will continue fundraising through Nicaragua's rainy season. This way, when the rains stop and the bees get busy again, so can our beekeepers.

I am raising funds for our beekeepers because I have seen the positive changes that beekeeping has evoked in these communities. Beekeeping has created economic independence for individuals whose crops are at the mercy of drought and heavy rains every year. Funds raised will go towards purchasing beekeeping materials such as materials to make bee boxes, materials to make honeycomb panels, smokers, protective suits, any centrifuge (or centrifuge repairs) to extract their honey, and more.

On April 9th, 2018, I will also be hosting a Charity of the Day at The Oregon Public House, here in Portland. Details on this to be added as it develops, but I hope that if you are in the area, you come and join us for some conversation on bees, activities for kids and adults, as well as some beer and cheer!
