Nic Ronk Recovery and Cure Campaign

Nic has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome which is cancer affecting the stem cells in the bone marrow, typically seen mostly in people over 60. Nicholas has a very rare chromosomal abnormality that has resulted in this diagnosis. Consequently, additional extensive genetic testing must be done to figure out its origin and familial trait. This testing can take a few months. The good news for Nic is that this non-aggressive cancer allows Nic to attend school in Austin this semester.  Nic is being monitored weekly in Austin by his physician for weekly blood work and platelet infusions. In January, Nic will have a bone marrow transplant. Several donors in the registry are a 100% match!  This is an enormous boost! Nic will not attend 2nd semester on campus this year due to his recovery time. A bone marrow transplant involves a week of chemo therapy to eliminate Nic’s bone marrow and that is followed by the stem cell transplant within 24 hours. After the transplant Nic will be in the hospital 3-4 weeks to wait for the new transplanted stem cells to respond. Once discharged, post transplant Nic will be recovering at home for 100 days with no exposure to anything other than trips to the hospital for blood work weekly.
Nic is otherwise leading a very normal and routine life as any very busy 19 year old University student, at the University of Texas.
Nonetheless, this ordeal has been an enormous emotional roller coaster for the entire family. Nic and his entire family are extremely grateful for everyone’s prayers and thoughtful messages of support. 2019 will be a difficult year, to say the least! In spite of the challenge, Nic is doing an amazing job of rising to the challenge! Nic has courage, and fight, and wisdom well beyond his 19 years. Nic is a true inspiration!
The Nic Ronk Recovery and Cure campaign has been established by friends of Nic’s, and friends of the Ronk family, in support of Nic’s speedy and complete recovery and cure. Nic's mom and dad, Bret and Karrie Ronk, are managing Nic's treatment, his care, and his recovery. Bret Ronk, Nic's dad, is the beneficiary of this account. Proceeds from the campaign will be utilized to offset Nic's medical and related expenses.
