On August 4th 2020, Beirut was rocked by the third largest explosion in the world.
The destruction is devastating - people are still searching for friends and family, shattered glass and rubble litters the city and many are struggling for help and shelter. My family and friends in Beirut have described the horror they have seen and have witnessed what no-one should have to experience ever. The explosion has left more than 150 dead (and counting), over 4000 injured and 300,000 civilians displaced or homeless.
My name is Firas Hamdan and I live in London, UK. I have a lot of family in Beirut and I know the impact this has had. My country is wounded, it is hurting and has been suffering with a disastrous financial crisis, famine and the COVID-19 pandemic... it did not deserve this. Beirut needs our help now more than ever!
I could not sit idly by and continue seeing heartbreaking images and videos without doing something. I am proud watching my Lebanese people begin to repair their country piece by piece and I want to do my part by committing to running 300,000m (300km) in August- a metre for every Beirut citizen that has been left homeless or displaced as a result of the explosion.
I am calling on my friends and family to donate whatever you can to the cause. NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL!
The money I raise will be split between Impact Lebanon - a nonprofit relief organisation that are raising funds for a number of NGOs that are doing vital work on the ground as we speak as well as other NGOs who are providing medical support, shelter and essential supplies to the people of Beirut
