As Australia endures an absolutely catastrophic bushfire season, on behalf of NFIA, I would like to take a moment to thank all the RFS and professional firefighters from across Australia, and the world who have worked tirelessly for months. They have continually put themselves in the path of these fires to safeguard communities and save lives and properties on a daily basis.
The scale of the crisis is hard to comprehend. The wildfires have so far burned more than 15 million acres, killed at least 24 people, destroyed nearly 2000 homes and have killed an estimated 1 billion animals.
Rebuilding the ravaged communities is going to be a mammoth task given the considerable damage to properties and businesses. Economic analysis estimates the direct costs to fire-affected regions from lost tourism, agricultural and retail income already lies between $1.1 billion to $1.9 billion this financial year.
In response to the disaster people across the country and around the world are generously donating to a range of organisations. The bushfire disaster is a national catastrophe with basically every State affected. The affected communities’ need for financial support is immediate and urgent.
And it demands a truly National response.
As a National organisation, NFIA can facilitate donations to a single National organisation – the Australian Red Cross bushfire appeal system which provides short and long-term support to people and communities impacted by the bushfires and will put our donations where they can be best used.
NFIA will kick off our fundraising effort by pledging $25,000.
This is way beyond what NFIA would normally consider donating to charity BUT this catastrophe truly warrants that our response be extraordinary. While it is great to give what we can in response to this disaster I ask that you follow NFIA’s lead and stretch yourself to dig even deeper when making your donation. Please bring your company’s people on board as well and encourage their donation through the Australian Red Cross bushfire appeal link below.
Our immediate NFIA bushfire fundraising goal is $100,000 within the next month!
In the longer term, we will bring in the Australian Red Cross bushfire appeal as a third charity under the umbrella of 2020 NFIA’s Patron’s Walk for Charity.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with all Australians impacted by the current bushfire crises. This includes all those who have suffered injury; lost livestock, property and pets; been stranded, evacuated and displaced; and those who are involved in firefighting efforts. In particular, our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of the people who thus far have been confirmed to have lost their lives.
