Newton's Run

We are a small rugby team/family based in New Tredegar and one of our childrens Dad's (Gareth "Gatch" Owen) has kindly volunteered to run the Cardiff Half Marathon in our team mascot suit "Newton" on October 7th. Newton proved to be very popular when we attended the Tiger Challenge At Butlins Minehead for our rugby tour this year and so Gatch came up with the idea to raise funds for the under 11s section who are an amazing team and thoroughly enjoy every minute of being part of the section.
Over the years the whole section has been supported by a local charity very close to our communities hearts, the "Sophie Pearson Community Fund", and alongside raising money for the U11's we also wanted to show our appreciation for all the support and good that the charity has done and continues to do by donating half of the proceeds from the run to Sophie's Fund. In November 2006 my daughter Sophie passed away after a short illness. She was diagnosed with a heart condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy in March 2006 and was then treated at the Childrens Heart Unit for Wales in Cardiffs Heath Hospital. Since this time Sophie's family and friends have been raising money for the Children's Heart Unit for Wales in her memory.
To date we have raised over £110,000 from various fundraising events, every year we hold a rugby 7s tournament and a bike ride. As a family we are incredibly thankful for the support that the fund is still receiving. We certainly wouldn't have been able to reach this phenomenal amount without the continued support from our local communities and the tireless fundraising efforts of many individuals.
