New Park at Bellefonte and Route 1

Donation protected
Big news! We've hit our goal of raising $22,500! Thank you so much to everyone who contributed. Keep an eye out in the fall for news about installation and a grand opening.

---------------------------------------------

Thanks to local businesses Nolan Strategic Communications, Truly-Life, Windmill Hill and Ironwood Property Maintenance for their generous donations. We are getting closer!

Did you know your contribution is tax deductible? If you're lucky enough to still itemize, we qualify as a charity and can help you out with a letter and EIN. Please contact us at [email redacted] and we can send you the documentation. Thanks for your consideration!

A BIG thank you to all the DRCA Chili Cook-off winners who generously contributed their winnings to the new park. $2,333 was donated to our $22,500 matching grant amount and we have  $7,667 left to raise! Kudos to Sue Kovalsky, Daniella Spigai & Christi Hart. Special thanks to Bobi Bomar and Ellen Patrick of Homes of Alexandria for sponsoring the Chili Cook-off prizes and beer. Be looking for our next fundraiser this spring to put us over the top!

The votes are in! Kettle Park is the name that received the most votes in our naming contest. The name has been sent to the Director of the Department of Rec, Parks + Cultural Activities, who will coordinate with  the City Naming Committee. There will be a month for community comments to be received. If all goes well, it will be presented to City Council for final approval. Keep your fingers crossed!

Our big news is that more than half of our funding goal has been met by a generous donation from the members of the Del Ray Citizens Association, who voted in October to donate $12,500! Thank you!

Neighbors, assisted by the Alexandria Beautification Commission, are turning the vacant, City-owned lot at the corner of Route 1 and Bellefonte in Alexandria, adjacent to the Simpson fields, into a park, complete with beds of meadow plantings and a grove of trees.

The park will: provide a place for the Del Ray and Potomac Yard communities to experience nature and enjoy relaxing outdoor activities with our neighbors in this passive space; provide a natural habitat for wildlife and insects; assist in pollution absorption; improve the commuter's experience to and from home and work; and beautify this section of Richmond Highway for the community, passersby and the environment. But we need your help!

This project has been accepted by the City into its PARKnership Community Matching Fund program, which provides matching grants to park and recreation facility improvement projects. We have until June 30, 2019 to raise $22,500, and the City of Alexandria will match that amount dollar for dollar. Implementation can begin immediately afterwards.
