My name is Brandon Newman, and I am a Senior at John Swett High School in Crockett, California. I have a wonderful opportunity to travel to Australia to play on an all-star football team. This is an all-star team out of California that I have been chosen to play with due to my accolades on the football field.
I am a native of Rodeo, California, where I grew up in the Bayo Vista Housing Project ran by the Contra Costa Housing Authority (the projects), until I was 14.
I've had to struggle my whole life with not many people expecting positive things from me. However, thanks to the teachers, the school, and the football team, I am going to graduate in 2015 and play football at Contra Costa College in San Pablo California. John Swett High School and the football team have helped me to turn my life around.
If I was not at practice, or working to remain academically eligible I would find myself in a lot of trouble in and around the projects of Rodeo. I have seen too many around me not be given any opportunity for success, or they blow the chance they had at success due to their life circumstance. I am fighting hard not to be a statistic, and I am going to do this through playing football. My goal is to eventually graduate college with a four year degree, and have the opportunity to give back to the community that gave so much to me.
Please help my dream come true and send me to Australia for this once in a lifetime experience.
