Newfie Leo Snider's Hit and Run

As many of you know, Drew and I both got Newfoundland Puppies last spring. They are the most loving and gentile giants around. On Friday morning, December 27, Drew’s 145-pound Newfoundland puppy, Leo, slipped out of his yard gate and attempted to cross a very busy intersection at the corner of Monroe Dr. and St. Charles Ave. While he was in the crosswalk as he had been trained to use, he was struck by a speeding hit-and-run driver. Drew heard screeching tires and the impact, and looked out his window to see Leo in the street yelping in pain. Thank heaven, two good Samaritans blocked traffic and stayed with Leo until Drew could get the car to take him to emergency care. It was clear he was seriously injured and was bleeding from multiple spots including his eye, mouth, arm, and paw. Drew took him to VCA emergency hospital where examinations confirmed that Leo was in really bad shape.
X-rays of Leo’s right leg showed that both major bones were not only broken, but shattered. Near the multiple breaks on his leg as well as his paw, Leo had two gaping wounds. The examinations revealed some good news that both his head and chest looked fine, however, Drew was told internal injuries could still manifest up to 24 to 48 hours after the injury. Due to the extent of Leo’s injuries, a specialist at a veterinary surgical center would be required to piece back the shattered bones. With the weekend approaching and the holiday season in full swing, Leo would have to wait till Monday for the surgery. In the meantime, the doctors and technicians at VCA took care of poor Leo for two days with pain management practices and drugs.
After a very long weekend at VCA, Leo was transferred to Blue Pearl Surgical Center on Sunday night and scheduled for a two hour emergency surgery on Monday. The orthopedic surgeon and his team called Drew following the surgery to let him know that Leo did well and had a good future. That said, Leo is in for a long, tough recovery. Due to the way Leo’s leg was shattered, and because there were so many breaks and bone fragments, normal casts, splits, and plates were not going to work. Instead, Leo’s leg was set using an external pin splint which he will have in place for up to six weeks. He will need to return to Blue Pearl each week to check the pins and change out his bandages during his recovery and therapy.
Thus far, Drew has incurred the following:
- Emergency stay Friday- Sunday $2,100
- Surgery- Monday- $6,900
- Follow up physician and wound weekly care for 6 weeks ($TBD)
- Home care when Drew is at work- $ per day. Amount TBD
Our goal is to help alleviate the cost of this emergency visit, x-rays, IV's, and surgery so that we can primarily focus on Leo's post care expenses. If you can't donate we ask for positive thoughts being sent his way. We are very appreciative of your help!
