Newcastle Stands With Ukraine

Newcastle Stands With Ukraine is a direct action initiative established with the purpose of delivering aid directly to those communities that mainstream organisations are not reaching.

Our trucks have left Newcastle and are in mainland Europe and are driving directly to the Ukrainian border to distribute aid.

There are many communities who are not being reached by mainstream aid agencies so we are taking direct action.

Donating via this page will enable us to purchase specifically targeted items (medicines/first aid equipment etc) that are otherwise unavailable via physical donations and will also cover the cost of petrol and carriage to deliver aid. Longer term we aim to set up a more ergonomic system of delivering targeted aid through connections made at ground level on our maiden journey.

Thank you from all at NSWU x

Some more detail...

Newcastle Stands With Ukraine is a direct action initiative established by Cllr. Nicu Ion and supported by Cllr. Nick Kemp to deliver aid directly to communities that are not being reached by mainstream aid organisations.

Like everyone we are absolutely horrified and heartbroken by what we are seeing unfold and feel that there is a real need to step up and show our humanity and our solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Nicu is the first Romanian Roma to be elected to public office in the UK and is in constant contact with friends and contacts in Romania and Ukraine.

We are working closely with a well organised network of local aid and humanitarian groups and our focus is on an area which is receiving the least help from mainstream agencies and on those people who are stranded there.

We know that the situation changes by the day and hence our contacts on the ground are updating us in real time.

We are being extremely sensible and will not put ourselves at unnecessary risk, but this is an opportunity for the City of Newcastle to proudly offer our fraternity and comradeship to the people of Ukraine and specifically and directly to those in most need.

Cllr. Ion is leading the initial aid convoy which has received exceptional support from many local communities and businesses and Cllr. Kemp is coordinating the collections from our city over the coming weeks.
