Melissa, Thomas and soon to be big brother, Orson are expecting their new baby in July. Everything was going great until the ultrasound around 20 weeks showed their new little one had a heart defect that would require open heart surgery in July.
The news was devastating for this family and the financial hardship overwhelming. This troubling news requires this family to move away from their home in New Mexico, as we have no specialist in the state that can preform this operation and relocate near the children's hospital in Denver, CO. They are expected to go a month early and stay several months afterwards while their new addition stays in ICU to recover from this major surgery.
Thomas and Melissa have a lot of pride so reaching out and asking for help from others is not something they wanted to do. Their close friends (me included) have watched them calculate and recalculate expenses and the stress has become almost unbearable to watch. This kind of financial burden would break any of us. However what choice do we have? Any of us would give everything, lose everything for our children if we had to. This family is no different. We knew we needed to help them so they can focus on what IS important - their new baby boy.
Both Thomas and Melissa will not be able to work during this time and have pets that will require a home sitter, their son's school payment (needed to hold his spot since the school will not hold it without compensation), mortgage payment, a rent payment in Denver, car payments, etc etc etc to cover while they are focusing on their son's survival.
Thankfully they do have insurance however any of you that have been through any surgery (even minor) know how expensive it is and this surgery will put them back thousands and thousands of dollars. They are not asking for help with this although God knows they will most likely need it. However, what I know they could use is some help from their friends or some good people out there that can help them cover their monthly bills and mortgage payment while they are away. They are also moving to a large AND very expensive city (i.e Denver) and helping with that rent payment is also something I added in my goal of $10,000 dollars. I figured about $8000 would cover a mortgage and a rental in Denver for 4 months (being very conservative). The rest will help hire a house sitter for four months so pets are looked after, help with Orson's school costs etc etc. I am most likely underestimating the true expense of all of this but knew that even this amount would help them get by until they both can get back to work.
The truth is that every dollar you could spare will help them not be stressed during this time. Even if its $1,$5, $20, $50, or more - it is greatly appreciated.
This family never asks for help and it was like pulling teeth for them to agree to let me do this for them. I know they need their friends, family and community's help now more than ever. I also know without a doubt they would do all they could to help another in this situation.
Please consider helping them if you can. Thank you for considering and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
