Hi all,
In the three years that I have been on faculty at Newberry College, I have seen the feral cat population grow rapidly. The colony is now estimated to be between thirty and fifty cats. While these kitties are well fed by college students who are always game to sneak some grilled chicken out of the cafeteria, they are not receiving proper nutrition or medical care.
That's where you come in. I am working with a local TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) organization out of Chapin, SC so that these kitties can be trapped, neutered, rabies-vaccinated, treated for fleas, and then brought right back to the campus that they have made their home. The funds raised here will all go to pay for the care of the cats. Anything raised beyond the price for the initial medical procedures will be used to purchase proper cat food, bedding, food dishes, etc. EVERY DIME RAISED HERE IS FOR THE TREATMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THESE CATS.
You may be wondering why we won't be working to adopt these cats out. The answer is simple: 1) The shelter here is over-crowded as it is and I would hate for this kitties to be euthanized. 2) Having a stabilized feral cat colony on campus keeps other kitties from taking up residence, helps keep the rodent population down, and provides a bit of comfort to homesick students who have grown used to their feline friends.
I know things are tight, but any amount that you could spare would be so appreciated. I see these furbabies every time I go to work and nothing would make me happier than being able to give them the gift of good health this holiday season. (Also, the females must be super tired of having kittens already! They need a reprieve from all the procreation, people!!!) ;)
