New Test for Urinary Infections

Our Goal
We are raising money for a new diagnostic test for people with chronic or long-term urinary tract infections. The researcher who is developing this test is Dr Sam Forster who works at the Hudson Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

Why This Test Matters
Every year over 150 million people worldwide get a urinary tract infection – or UTI. Most will get better with one treatment of antibiotics, but about 40% won't, and they can go on to develop chronic long-term infections where the bacteria are embedded in the bladder. The infection then becomes difficult to detect and that’s where current tests are a problem. They have a high rate of failure and therefore miss a lot of genuine infections, leaving many people without proper treatment and suffering terrible pain.
Who Is Dr Forster
Dr Forster is well known in the scientific community for his work with Professor Alan Wolfe at Loyola University in Chicago, as they were the first to discover that the bladder has its own microbiome. Before that, it was thought that urine was completely sterile, but since then in 2012, we know that it isn’t. This has revolutionised the way we understand bladder health.
What We Need
What he needs now is just $30,000 to employ a PHD student for three years to get enough data to launch a full-scale trial of this test. This will involve using DNA testing plus different types of culture testing to avoid missing any of the harmful bacteria.
