New Kidneys for Bobby

I want to talk to you all about my nephew. In the first picture he is getting ready to commission into the Navy with his Bachelors degree he’d worked so hard for. The pictures to the right is him receiving dialysis treatment. Let’s start from the beginning. Since we were kids Bobby has always been so energetic, always on the go, and enjoyed sports such as tennis ! He played for his college in Kansas and was so passionate for the sport. Everything he does he does it with his whole heart and does not give up. Failure was not an option. He succeeds at everything he does and surpasses every obstacle.

Moving on, he’s getting ready for Officer training for the navy. He gets there and he’s having difficulty running due to swollen feet and shoes that had been given to him that are too small. He is sent home for a while and is brought back to be told his blood pressure is too high. He was devastated by this. Even with much encouragement and talks with his family, he is just destroyed by the outcome. Fast-forward to Christmas. He has this cold he cannot beat. The doctor prescribes cold medicine and sends him on his way. Weeks later he still cannot beat this cold. His arms feel tingly and he’s vomiting profusely. Back to the doctor he’s sent to a cardiologist who runs tests and tells him he has a hole in his heart. Baffled is an understatement. Even at birth there was never word of him having a congenital heart defect. They wanted to run more tests to see if he was a candidate for surgery.

One day after his cardiologist visit, he starts to feel awful, dreadful, just plain terrible. He’s rushed to the ER. Blood tests were run and they tell him that his blood tests were showing anemia and poor kidney function. He’s admitted. Here he stays for a week. Worried. Scared. Anxious. What’s wrong with me? He keeps asking himself. Finally one morning the doctor comes in and informs him he has a rare autoimmune disease called Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy. We were appalled... HOW???? Everyone in the family begins to inform themselves and the question still stands as to how????
IgA is a protein in the kidneys that fight off infection. However his disease causes them to settle in the kidneys. For years this disease can show no symptoms and before it’s too late, individuals with this disease end up with end stage renal disease. And here we are. Bobby was diagnosed with end stage renal disease and is in dire need of a new set of kidneys. 24 years young. He started dialysis in the hospital during his stay. Thankfully he is now home and doing outpatient dialysis three times a week three hour sessions each. He is going to start training on at-home peritoneal dialysis soon so he can be in the comfort of his own home. If you do not know much about dialysis it basically is a large machine that pulls blood from your body to clean and filter what your kidneys are unable to and streams it back in. If you’ve ever given blood and feel so drained and tired, imagine that feeling times 100. You are freezing cold, exhausted, and feel down right AWFUL.

Now everything in life has been put on hold for him because of this crushing disease. He wanted to do so many things.
He one of the strongest people i have ever had the honor of knowing. And to be near the same age as me i cannot imagine the pain. You are so loved Bobby. Don’t ever forget that. Your future is still just as bright as before and I KNOW you will not let this stop you. Bobby is now talking about going to nursing school to become an RN like his Auntie ❤️❤️❤️. You never cease to amaze me. You really are an amazing individual.
I’ve started a GoFundMe (link below) to help Bobby pay for his new kidneys. You don’t have to donate because prayers are truly powerful and very much appreciated as well. Thank you for taking the time to read his story ❤️
