Why I'm Raising Money
I have decided to set up a GoFundMe campaign to support the creation of starting my business. I'm starting a freelance graphic design and branding studio. I've always had a passion for art and when I started working as a graduate assistant one of the things I enjoyed the most was event planning and creating flyers for event invites and newsletters that would get released from the various departments I worked for on campus. I also have years of experience doing freelance event planning and graphic designs for non-profits.
I first chose to secure money to start my freelance business's by applying for traditional funding from financial institutions such as banks, credit unions, and the Small Business Association (SBA) in New Haven, CT but these institutions have historically upheld systematic racism and continue to not extend Black and Brown folks access to capital and money. I decided to not let that prevent me from starting my business and I chose GoFundMe as an alternative way to raise money for my business. Once I raise enough funds to start my business I plan to reinvest the money I make for my business back into it so that I could hire Black and Brown folks to work with me. My dream is to help Black and Brown folks financially provide a better life for themselves, their families, and their communities.
Why not now?
During these troubled times, there is an immediate need to protect and ground ourselves by taking care of ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. There exists a need to create a legacy for our future generations. The creation and sustainment of Black and Brown start-ups is an important opportunities. There are hashtags such as #buyblack, #bankblack, and #suportblackbusiness that exist to amplify the voices of Black and Brown entrepreneurs who are traditionally not given a seat at the table within organizations and institutions that have historically denied access to create financial abundance and wealth creation for themselves and their communities. I see this business this GoFundMe campaign as a great chance to be able to control the narrative of Black and Brown entrepreneurs that seek alternative forms to start-up their business due to the racial wealth gap in the U.S. and I seek to provide educational opportunities to help people understand Black and Brown stories in business and entrepreneurship within the access to capital and funding industry.
Where will the campaign proceeds go?
The funds I raise will go towards:
· registering my business with the State of Connecticut
· purchasing office equipment
· securing a website for my freelance business
· hiring a attorney, bookkeeper/accountant, and a
social media marketer
Any contributions made to the "New Haven Black Woman Owned Business" beyond the needed funds to register the business, purchase equipment, and create a website will be made available to Black and Brown entrepreneurs that concentrate on providing artistic creations as a service to people and organizations so that they too will be able to register their businesses, purchase business equipment, secure a website, and hire a team of professionals to help support them in running their business successfully.
Follow my Instagram dedicated to my graphic design business. I'm in the early stages of creating my business. I will be constantly providing updated about the progress of starting my graphic design business as I make continually forward movement with the funds I receive from the GoFundMe campaign and money that friends and family use to invest in my business.
