New Computer for Hobbies

The Goal:
$1300 for a Custom Computer
Why?:
I think a lot of us can relate to spending all day at our jobs only to get home a different set of tasks that need doing. Weekends turn into collection pools for unfinished tasks like yard work and household repairs and suddenly you’re back at work. As a result, it’s not always easy to justify saving up money for yourself for what arguably is just a hobby - not when so many other responsibilities call for your financial attention.
I’m a Senior Graphic Designer who makes decent pay, but ironically I don’t have the resources to replace my aging, slow computer which I’ve used for my personal design. Over the years, I’ve been able to create a number of pieces of artwork I’m really proud of, from 3D Animated TIE Fighters, to various nerdy maps I sell on Etsy for some weekend spare change. Though my original plan last year was to use Etsy to finance my new computer, my lackluster sales haven’t made that possible.
So, the plan has been to setup a GoFundMe to act like a tip jar and create some artwork for anyone who can lend a hand in my endeavor. Anyone who can donate to my personal cause I would be forever thankful for, it means a lot to me to be able to design on my own time and not simply for work. Because truthfully designing for an agency can be disheartening at times. You spill your creative energy into a project to have it ultimately picked apart by committee and turned into whatever the corporate machine dictates it to be. Not that I don’t understand why this is- or even disagree with it. But when being creative is your passion in life, it’s equally important to be able to produce artwork that isn’t being ‘designed’ by committee but rather is the free expression of the creative. It helps keep my head screwed on lol
For a long time my old computer filled this role, with its AMD Phenom 2 3.4ghz processor and 16GB of RAM- it was a great asset for animation, designing or just playing a game when the mood struck me.
Unfortunately, those days have entered the twilight of death’s cold breath as it’s inched closer and closer to receiving death’s fatal kiss. Ok, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but the machine isn’t running like it used to. It takes about 25 minutes to boot up and with a faulty power supply there’s an equally strong chance it’ll turn off after 25 more minutes! It’s not very useful for animation or design either, since the hard drive is sluggish and it’s response time is just… terrible.
So with that said, I’m looking to build a new computer inside the case of my current computer. No point in buying a new one of those. What I am looking to purchase however is…
