The Jesus Sanchez Story
Hi, my name is Ysa Garcia. Together with my children Jesús and Daniela I decided to leave Venezuela due to the difficult situation that our country is going through. We arrived in the United States in search of security and a better life. It is our desire to purchase a new power chair for Jesus that he will be more comfortable in. One that will allow him to recline the back rest with in order to provide relief after spending the entire day in an upright position from, and one that he will be able to elevate to any working height table or desk.
We have been able to obtain a used, rather old power chair for him to get around with in order to provide a small level of independence, but the chair is not qualified for bus travel with a passenger in it, so he must wear a harness and be physically moved out of his chair and strapped into one of the bus bench seats in order to be transported to and from school. This maneuver is taxing on him and potentially dangerous if not done with great care.
His chair does not fit well under most tables and teachers are forced to find a table that he will be able to use.
Jesus was born 4 weeks premature and suffered from Syndactyly (two of his toes were joined or webbed at birth). During a later surgery there were complications with anesthesiology and he suffered an incident of cerebral hypoxia (Reduced supply of oxygen to the brain) this resulted in a diagnosed case of cerebral palsy.
After many hours of physiotherapy (treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery).
Treatments of occupational therapy, pool therapy, horses, and dolphins were also administered following the incident.
Today, at 16 Jesus has only limited use of his left hand but remains a happy and involved boy at his school in Indiana. He always has a great smile on to greet anyone he sees on his travels through the hallways at school and in class. For all the mental and physical trauma he has endured he exhibits surprising levels of intelligence. He has many great friends who value his opinions as well as his humor and contagious laughter.
He loves technology, going to the movies, listening to music, and going to the theater. With a special appreciation of classical music, he was once invited to be a guest conductor of the Merida Symphony Orchestra in the State of Merida Venezuela where we are from.
Currently, due to his physical handicap he is learning the only instrument he can comfortably play, the xylophone. (More on this as he progresses with his lesson)
