The past 2 years have been very trying, with multiple hospital admissions, specialist appointments and rehabilitation for us all.
Amongst other things, I have been left with permanent peroneal nerve damage, which is commonly known as "foot drop". This means that I am unable to move my foot (or feel it) which impedes my ability to walk.
After my last hospital admission (for total hip replacement), I was provided with an AFO to keep my foot in the correct position and stop me tripping on it when I walk. This was an "off the shelf" solution provided by Qld Health.
What is an AFO?
Ankle-Foot Orthosis: A brace, usually made of plastic, that is worn on the lower leg and foot to support the ankle, hold the foot and ankle in the correct position and correct foot drop. Abbreviated AFO.
It has been good, however now I'm a bit more mobile, this AFO is heavy and uncomfortable. It is causing irritation to my leg and is not the right fit for my leg. The concern is, is that it may cause further blood clots as it digs into my calf.
I saw an orthatist today, who has fitted me, and ordered me, a new carbon fibre AFO which feels amazing! Only problem is the prohibitive cost, at close to $900.
Unfortunately, there is no public funding for this, and NDIS still haven't even processed my application. My Sickness Allowance doesn't allow me to even think about budgeting this expense in, and all savings have been exhausted over the last 2 years of not being able to work.
Whilst I don't like to ask, I would be very grateful if you could possibly spare a few
$$ to enable me to purchase this new AFO. Everyone has been so generous throughout this whole ordeal and I very much appreciate all the help you've given us.
Thanks and love Deb xx
