Never Lose Hope Campaign 2020

Now, more than ever, families of children in emergent care need our help. The We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund gets money - in the form of gift cards and bill pay assistance - to families of pediatric patients … right now!

The We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund was created in 2016 to provide financial assistance to eligible families whose children are treated at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore to help meet financial needs associated with the costs of critical, and often life-saving medical treatments they desperately need. Created by the youth-led organization, the We Cancerve Movement, and started with a $5,000 investment from prize money won by Founder Grace Callwood, when she was 10 years old, the We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund assists children 18 years old or younger who live with chronic illnesses, or who are currently in ongoing medical treatment at Sinai Hospital for a serious health condition.  These children's families also struggle to meet the financial burdens associated with their child’s care.

Since 2016, we have raised more than $15,000 for families families who need help from this fund.  Our fund is administered by Sinai’s Development Office. They work directly with medical staff and social workers to best determine families that could benefit most from the fund.

By this time last year, our fund covered 350 parking passes, 580 food vouchers at the hospital cafeteria and at least 110 Uber rides so parents could get their children to chemo and other appointments. Families’ needs have changed over the past six months; with COVID-19, not only have families been met with lost employment and changes to how they’re able to travel to and from the hospital, the impact social isolation has had on children in medical treatment has been exacerbated. In addition to helping families meet routine needs such as:

•prescription drug co-pays
•over-the-counter medicines
•transportation to/from treatment
•insurance co-pays
•out of pocket costs
•medical supplies

our fund also provides for recreational services for young children and teens to help them overcome the burdens of loneliness that illness often brings, even when there isn’t a global pandemic!  Facing catastrophic illness like cancer and sickle cell can be devastating to families and obviously hard on the pediatric patient.  Facing these illnesses amidst a pandemic that's stifling the already restrictive ways they navigate their daily lives often leaves these families feeling a bit hopeless! Help us help them. Let's inspire them. Never lose hope!
