My Story
My name is Claire and in May 2015 at the age of 34 I suffered a Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) from a Ruptured Aneurysm. Resulting in a craniotomy to clip the aneurysm.
Due to the size of the bleed I then suffered a Vasospasm. Basically a stroke. I was then pumped with adrenaline to get as much blood & oxygen up to my brain while they tried to find where the blockage was. As a result of the amount of adrenaline being pumped through my body I got a pulmonary chest infection and I was then put into a induced coma.
It left me paralysed down the right side of my body.
I spent in total 5 weeks in hospital and then was lucky enough to meet the criteria to have 7 weeks in a Neuro Rehabilitation facility called Danesbury.
It has been a difficult 3.5yrs with improvements all the time. It’s been tiring learning to walk again, foot drop, learning to use my right hand, muscle spasm, losing my independence, brain fatigue, Asphasia (an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write), Dysphasia (language disorder marked by deficiency in the generation of speech, and sometimes also in its comprehension), anxiety, depression, mood swings to name a few.
In the last 3.5yrs I wouldn’t have got as far as I have without the support of my partner & family but the stress that has come with it all has taken its toll on us all. Not forgetting dear friends and the professionals who have helped me so far.
My recovery
My recovery has come far since the start of this journey, building strength and relearning how to use my limbs has been challenging and at some times despairing. Improvement is harder now as learning fine movements and technique requires concentration which my changed brain struggles with. It also means that I need professionals with neurological backgrounds and equipment to help me learn.
There are so many services out there to help people who have paralysis of their body. But they aren’t cheap. All savings we had are spent and after living expenses (mortgage, car, bills etc) my disability payments don’t stretch that far.
But this isn’t just about my recovery there is a bigger plan............
I know the fear of stepping into a gym and feeling like everyone is watching, or thinking that you can’t use the equipment, thinking that there isn’t any point and no one understands. That is why through a charity called InstructAbility I am going to going to learn to become a gym instructor. It’s free and I pay it back by volunteering in their gym.
Since my life took this new direction I’ve realised and had my eyes opened wide to the fact that there isn’t enough support out there for disabled people. Once discharged from hospital and any community physio has finished then you are left to it.
I don’t want to see people struggle with the costs the way that I am. I don’t want people to think like I have on several occasions that their families’ lives would be easier if I wasn’t here. I want to help more people in a similar situation to me be able to afford more rehab. To be able to get more of their independence back. To not feel like a nobody. To not feel like where they are currently is as far as they will ever get. To carry on progressing in their journey. That’s why I have created this and am asking for your generosity to help me to not only improve my mobility and independence but in the bigger picture other peoples too.
Which is why I am asking for £6,000 so that so I can access these services and therapies, to improve my own recovery as far as I can, and help other people with disabilities.
Breakdown of Cost over a month
Neurophysio £68 per hr x 4=£272
Hydro Therapy initial assessment £75+
Hydro Therapy 30min session £60 x 4 =£240
45min session £80 x 4 =£320
60min session £100 x 4 = £400
Personal Trainer for fitness £35 per hr x 4 = £140
Neuropsychology £65 per hr x 4 = £260
One off payments
Saebo Glove to help get function in your hand. I used one of these in a 2weeks trial and it changed the function I got in my hand. I couldn’t buy it as it costs £330. (Through your kind donations I have this now. Thank you).
Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) : new treatment technique that improves the arm motor ability and the functional use of a paretic arm - hand.
£2800 for 3.5 hrs a day for a 2week course.
Functional Electrical Stimulation Machine (FES) FES: stimulates the nerves and activates weakened muscles to provide an aid to walking which assists with recovery and independent mobility.
The use of FES would improve my walking so that my foot lands correctly as I walk. £70+
1-2-1 session with Tom Balchin the Director & founder of the founder of ARNI ( Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury) who In 1997 I had a major brain haemorrhage that paralysed the left side of his body costs £550.
Timescale
I am hopefully planning to start the intensive therapy from August onwards after I have I have qualified as a fitness instructor and completed my voluntary gym placement.

Like a lot of stroke survivors out there, I am not prepared to settle with where I am in my recovery. I am not prepared to believe that the current mobility I have is as far as I will get. But like a lot of things in life it comes down to cost.
