My name is Devin and this request for help is for my mom, Net. For the past several months, my mom has had a recurring illness – initially assumed to be pneumonia. Her symptoms persisted, and after undergoing further medical tests, we received grave news. My mom is only 41 years old and despite being a non-smoker, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer. Since it had already spread to her brain, hip bone, and pelvic bones, we’ve had to act quickly with treatments.
A gene mutation EGFR that is only found in 15% of patients was fortunately discovered in her cancer cells. This mutation allows for her to take a oral targeted chemo medication called Gilotrif, instead of enduring traditional chemotherapy and radiation. The drug targets all cancer cells from the neck down, but as for removal of her 3 brain tumors, she’s had to undergo a laser procedure called gamma knife surgery.
Gilotrif will treat and manage her cancer but has numerous side effects. Some side effects she suffers from are painful sores inside her mouth and scalp, rashes all over her body and face, loss of appetite, minor hair loss, fatigue, and severe diarrhea. Unfortunately, all of these procedures and treatments will cost thousands of dollars. Medical expenses are piling up quickly. Just one month's worth of Gilotrif pills alone has a retail cost of $9,500. We hoped that her health insurance would cover more of her medical expenses, but she has an extremely high deductible. On top of these medical treatments, we are integrating holistic treatments, which are not covered by her health insurance and can be quite expensive.
My mom is known to all as a sweet, hard-working, giving, and loving woman. She always goes the extra mile to help someone out. Despite her life-threatening illness, she continues to push forward with a positive attitude.
She still continues to work two jobs to help support our family, while juggling her time to attend doctor’s appointments and medical procedures. We worry that these burdens will increase, and negatively impact her health as she grows weaker.
We ask that you please open your hearts and assist my mom with her medical expenses, in order to create an optimal stress-free healing environment. Even through uncertainty, we are praying for a miracle. But first, the best we can do is manage her lifestyle and time with us. Any amount donated is greatly appreciated.
