Nesya's battle against Leukemia

Donation protected

Hi,

Meet our sweet Nesya Chaya.

Nesya was born (Nov. 26,2024/25th of Cheshvan) with Congenital Leukemia (A.L.L. B-Cell with km2ta). While leukemia is the most common cancer in children, infant leukemia (under 1 year) is very rare and to be born with leukemia (congenital) is close to unheard of. To provide context, it is estimated to occur in only 1 in 5 million births.

After birth, Nesya was immediately admitted into the Neonatal ICU at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). In short order, they discovered a high-level of immature white blood cells, a telltale sign of Leukemia.

In the short time since Nesya's birth, it has become clear that she is a calm and generous soul. The number of good deeds that Nesya has inspired is heartwarming and uplifting. Even Nesya's blood type, O- (universal giver) points to her selfless nature.

Nesya has 6 older siblings (aged 2 - 11) who can't wait to hold her and play with her. Their lives have been profoundly impacted. It is not clear what has been harder for them, not to have their mom around or not to see Nesya and have her home. Despite it all, they have stepped up to help each other in beautiful ways.

Nesya's birth, while a great blessing, has changed our lives dramatically.

Nora (Nesya's mom) has all but needed to move into the hospital to be with Nesya. The expectation is somewhere between 1-2 years of primarily inpatient care. Perhaps longer. We hope less.

Our goal is a cure! There is a 104 week plan to recovery and remission. We are expecting a hopeful yet long and uncertain treatment path ahead. We are told there will be many forks in the road that will dictate treatment.

Blood transfusions are now a weekly occurrence. There are so many medications (most of which we cannot pronounce their names). Many of these medications are to manage side-effects of leukemia battling meds. A bone marrow transfusion(s) seems all to close in the horizon (requiring months in Toronto at Sick Kids Hospital). The kids have all been tested to see if they are a match.

Our goal is to raise enough to provide us with a 2-year safety net to cover the many financial needs that have and will arise as a result of Nesya's diagnosis. In so doing, we can focus entirely on Nesya's treatment and provide stability to Nesya's siblings without the added stress of financial worries.

This includes a full-time helper at home who will help keep the home afloat. Nadav (2-years old) will need to start daycare immediately (sooner than planned). The cost of travel and hotel stays to receive a transplant, or other advanced treatment is a very real possibility. Decreased income from needing to take unpaid vacation seems inevitable.

Every donation, big or small, will make a difference. If you’re unable to give, please consider sharing this with your network or keeping Nesya in your thoughts and prayers.

The Gates of Tears

Many tears have been shed since Nesya's birth - both in joy and pain. Judaism teaches that the gates of prayer are never locked, and the gates of tears do not go unanswered. We thank you all for your generosity in taking a moment in saying a prayer for Nesya's complete and speedy recovery (To join an on-going Tehillim/prayer group for Nesya, please contact Ori at [phone redacted]). This has had a deep impact on her and our health - physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
