Nepal: Menstrual Hygiene for girls

Donation protected
With International Women’s Day just around the corner I love to invite my women (and men) friends to support this innovative, locally initiated and worthy cause of local women in Nepal supporting and empowering Nepali girls.

Menstrual hygiene is a huge challenge for girls in Nepal, many miss days of school every month due to having no hygienic way to deal with their periods. In addition most of them do not have any information about their changing bodies, which can be very frightening.

Nirmala, a Nepali nurse friend of mine recently received 200 'menstrual hygiene kits' from a charity overseas and started visiting local school to hold education sessions for girls and to distribute kits, containing a number of re-usable, washable pads, panties all packed in a little bag. Since then Nirmala has been inundated with requests from schools all around the region to please come, hold education classes and give out menstrual hygiene kits to the girls to enable them dignified participation to normal life activities during their periods.
Nirmala, instead of trying to access more kits from overseas had the wonderful idea to access a local women’s group and teach them how to sew and put together kits themselves, so that they can be locally produced and at the same time provide a small pocket money for local women.

Aim of this project:
Equip (purchase of 4 sewing machines and interlockers, scissors and other sewing items as well as a starting amount of materials - including specially absorbent material which will be purchased from India) and train a local women’s group in Nepalgunj/Nepal to produce locally made high standard menstrual hygiene kits -  with Nirmala leading this initiative.

Schools (and some local charities) have indicated that they are willing to pay for the kits, so the women’s group will be able to sell the kits at a low price, which will ensure raw materials can continue to be purchase on top of a small profit for the women involved.
Highly motivated women (volunteers) will be visiting schools in order to reach as many girls as possible with this life changing message.

My women, midwife, nurse and male friends, can we all take on this challenge and support local Nepali women to help girls in their communities this International Women’s Day 2018.
$ 1950 will cover equipment, start up materials and training of women’s group (and includes also the required ‘Go-fund-me’ fees).
