Nepal Repay Ride

In November I will take part in a fundraising trip for the company I work for to deliver funds and help to communities in Nepal. I am very excited to be able to give in a meaningful way to communities that really do need it. This social program at my work has been running for 6 months with lots of fund raising and activities and we have managed to raise $30k.
Firstly, the trip will be focused on building a new block of classrooms for the Sindhu Primary School. The school is located in a small village in the Tanahun region of Central Nepal. It is a very low- income area comprised of mostly fishermen and pottery makers of Mongolian descent. Predominantly the community is of Dalit or “untouchable” caste (lowest caste). The community has close to 350 households and around 350 children of school age.
The school also has many disabled students in attendance (15-20 students), which is very uncommon in Nepal, where students with disabilities are less likely to get an education. These groups rarely have access to proper nutrition, sanitation, education and clothing.
Recently, the school was partially supported financially to help fix some of the damage caused by the Gorkha earthquake, and one of their two blocks were rebuilt. However, the secondary block that once consisted of five classrooms has remained unusable. More than three years after the earthquake, the school is still unable to return to regular classes and currently has only 50 students.
The second component of the trip will include a visit to The Palu Bari Women’s Educational Facility (Palanchok Bagawati Women’s School) - An existing THISWORLDEXISTS project in the Sankhu district of Nepal, located about an hour and a half drive from Kathmandu. The school was destroyed by the earthquake in 2015, but THISWORLDEXISTS have been able to completely fund the rebuild of this important educational facility for this community.
Women in Nepal are extremely marginalised, are typically kept to household duties and, in many cases, do not leave their homes. Through the work of Nirmal Thapa and his community learning centre, they have been able to change the dynamic of these gender expectations in surrounding villages. The school aims to provide women with basic literacy and numeracy skills, as well as targeted vocational skills such as candle making, shoe making, incense making etc.
So… for my part in this I will be doing three things, 1) Working on the building site for the days we are in Nepal, 2) delivering the funds we have raised as well as making a significant personal contribution and 3) raising as much money to ensure we deliver on our promises to make a meaningful difference on this journey…. That’s where you come in.
We have organised a fund raising bike ride and will be riding 250km in one day to raise as much as possible to deliver on my commitment.
