Adventure tourism is a staple of the Nepalese economy. Resting in the heart of the Himalayas, there is plenty to explore from the highest mountains in the world to a rich culture of hardworking people. Because of this, Nepal draws a lot of attention from adventure enthusiasts around the world. Many families rely on profiting from the adventure tourism industry in some way.
This is why a group of UNH students are teaming up with the newly developed Outdoor Adventure Center to establish a program for outdoor education and wilderness medicine. It is the hope of these students that the center will provide not only an opportunity and connection for future UNH students to visit Nepal but more importantly establish an education center that will act as a resource for the Nepalese people to participate in recreational, therapeutic, and educational outdoor pursuits. The students' primary goal is to assist in implementing an experiential education curriculum at the center, similar to the world renown outdoor education program at UNH.
It is the hope that this collaboration will give the students an opportunity to learn how to develop curriculum, work with diverse populations, and establish a network in Kathmandu. Furthermore, this is an opportunity to expand the reaches of experiential education practices and teach standards that are practiced here at UNH.
In order to successfully complete this project, the group of students will be traveling to Nepal to meet with the founder of the Outdoor Adventure Center to further assess the needs of the program. From there, the students will begin work on getting the center up and running. Any donations received will assist the students in making this dream a reality.
The students hope that Nepal continues to grow into the adventure capital of the world and that they can assist in ensuring that there are plenty of certified Nepalese people who can use the incredible natural resources around them to provide an important service to their community.
