Neighborhood Relief: Support Victims of Beirut

Donation protected
In the absence of governance or social security, the Lebanese people have been entirely on their own in cleaning the rubble, saving lives, and reconstructing since the devastating explosion of August 4 that has left Beirut city in ruins and communities shattered.

We have always known and believed that a people-centered revolution is core to shaping our society from a grassroots level. Based on Beirut Madinati's history of building and empowering neighborhoods, we are certain that saving Beirut’s communities through organized neighborhood mobilization is key to social and political change. That is, neighborhoods decide, communicate, and mobilize around their needs.

As people are in the process of recovery and home repair, Beirut Madinati would like to support neighborhoods affected by the explosion so that they can stay in their homes or be relocated nearby. We say no to gentrification!

In this effort, we will work as community mobilizers in our neighborhoods alongside others on the ground. Mobilizers are key to bringing communities closer together, identifying needs and problems, and strategizing solutions to protect lifestyles and livelihoods and ultimately push authorities to implement sustainable change. In the aftermath of the explosion, mobilizers can be reliable conduits for their neighborhoods and residents and essential in fortifying and linking with a network of people and organizations.

All efforts made possible through your generous funding will be communicated directly to you and on our platforms.

Beirut Madinati’s role will be the following:

-       Act as and Identify key mobilizers in the areas of Khandak el Ghamiq, Karantina, Mar Michayel, Gemmayze, and other neighborhoods as mobilizers are identified.

-           Empower and support community mobilizers

-           Link networks of groups and initiatives on the ground

-          Ensure that immediate needs as a result of the explosion are met in specific areas

-           Translate neighborhood needs into political action/policy

-           Hold regular meetings with stakeholders

Funding will support:

-         Needs of neighborhood residents as a result of the explosion including but not limited to repair costs and relief projects,

-           Mobilizer costs (telecommunications, transportation, food)

-           Other costs as they arise
