Neighborhood Flood Protection

Please help protect us from developer mistakes which could cause our homes to flood.

The photo above is of the Cypress Creek Golf Course functioning correctly as a protective drainage basin after a fairly common Southeast Florida rain storm, not a hurricane.  These are the fairways, not normal water hazards on the golf course.

At the very center of the Cypress Creek Development, lies the Cypress Creek Golf Course.  It was designed to collect stormwater runoff to keep our neighborhood's homes from flooding.  It was designed and legally permitted to serve as the drainage basin for our entire Development at its inception, more than 4 decades ago.  The absorptive capacity of the Golf Course (like a big sponge) has served as a vital component of the drainage system design that protects the homes in our neighborhood from flooding.

A developer wants to replace that sponge with houses, roads and driveways in the very center of our neighborhood.  Making it even worse, new Palm Beach County regulations require those houses, roads and driveways to be constructed at a higher elevation than the existing homes that surround the golf course, shifting all the flooding risks to our neighborhood.  Replacing the golf course with these hard surfaces, and the difference in elevation between the new development and Cypress Creek homes potentially creates a very serious flooding problem.

Therefore, we need an independent engineering review.  This engineering review is necessary to make sure that the developer proposes to create sufficient drainage and stormwater runoff storage capacity to protect our existing neighborhood from the increased flooding risks.

I am a resident of the Cypress Creek Development in Palm Beach County, Florida.  To protect our neighborhood, I have hired an independent, local engineering firm, Grandusky and Lamb, to review these calculations.  There are costs associated with the engineers' review of the available data, permits and the design of the existing drainage system.  Then there are costs to perform the engineering calculations necessary to establish the mathematical model for the existing drainage system as a baseline for comparison to changes proposed by the developer.   There are additional costs to essentially repeat those calculations to determine the impacts of the proposed development and the new drainage system design.

I hope that some will agree that this investment in the community is worthy of a contribution to help offset my direct expenses to protect the Cypress Creek neighborhood from flooding.

I greatly appreciate any support.
