SUICIDE PREVENTION:
NEED2 Suicide Prevention Education and Support was founded in Victoria in 1970 by a group at the University of Victoria where it operated as a phone crisis line for almost 40 years before they did away with the phone line and introduced www.youthspace.ca an online crisis chat portal that operates nightly from Victoria BC between 6pm-midnight PST and is the only chat service that serves all of Canada for youth under 30.

ME:
After dropping a significant amount of body weight (170lbs) and some unhealthy habits I have found running as an activity I enjoy. Just over two months ago I began running at 20 seconds on, one minute rest. Now just 27months later I am here training and fundraising for my first full marathon. Thats crazy! Please donate to show your support of helping me achieve my goal of raising 1200$ and running this marathon.!!
And here are some stats to give you the bigger picture:
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in youth between the ages of 15-24.
Today in Canada, 11 people will die by suicide and another 111 will attempt to end their lives.
Last year youthspace.ca had 3416 chats taken by 90 volunteers over 5069 volunteer hours.
350 of those chats came from Alberta.
1379 came from British Columbia
44% of those chats were about mental and emotional health
22% Suicide and self-injury
5% family issues
Of those that are at high risk for suicide an intervention is called in that visitor’s community and medical services can be sent to aid them, most often saving a life. By using youthspace.ca, often volunteers can emotionally support each individual and an intervention doesn’t need to be called.
