Loki needs surgery - accident
Donation protected
Hi my name is Clare, I am usually not one to ever ask for help especially for money. Life has been a bit rough lately and my stress levels have been through the roof. I suffer Chronic migraine daily and work hard to run my own equine business. My dad has been very sick and had open heart surgery and life has been a bit rough.
Last night (Sunday evening 17/3/24) my beautiful boy Loki was found injured by my friend when she went to feed him dinner. We immediately called the vet out and organised to move him to Sth Eastern Equine Hospital. He has injured all four legs, three severe and needing surgery and the fourth with minor scrapes. His front right leg is cut down to the bone under his knee and his knee joint is compromised. His front near leg is cut over is fetlock and compromised his fetlock joint. And his near hind is also cut on his fetlock and his coronet band. All three legs need surgery.
He is walking and bending his joints but needs surgery to prevent infections in his joints. His front right leg also needs attention where he has cut it under his knee to the bone, he has cut some ligaments etc there but we will know more after surgery.
Currently I have been quoted $5000 - $10000 vet bills depending on how the surgery goes and then it will increase with after care.
I have chosen to do surgery because Loki is only 9 years old and a very fit and healthy boy. We do not know how he has done this damage as we have not found any evidence of what he did it on in his paddock.
Loki is a 17.1 hh beautiful thoroughbred, he loves water and I swear he is part hippopotamus. We have even caught him sleeping in his dam with his head sticking out of the side. He acts like a big puppy dog and follows you around licking you. He is a big goof ball and plays a lot with his paddock mates. He has such a kind soul and very loving and I have to give him the best chances of getting through this and healing. As always these disasters always come at a bad time in your life and for me its hard to ask for help.
I always try to give and help others when they need it so friends tell me its ok to ask. I know some don't agree with people asking for charity and that is ok I don't want anyone to feel they have to donate. But if you have anything to spare to help I would be eternally grateful.
I haven't asked for enough to cover what this is going to cost just enough to help take the pressure off and relieve some stress.
Thankyou for reading and to everyone that lends a hand, Loki and I will be eternally grateful.
Thankyou
Clare
Edit 20/3/24
UPDATE: Loki had surgery on his 3 legs at 3.30pm on Monday. It went for longer than expected and he was on the table roughly 3 hours. The surgeon was happy with the 3 joints and cleaned them all out and stitched everything up. She did find his front leg bone had an indentation which could cause problems but we will have to wait and see.
Tuesday he has had some on and off colic all day so is on fluids and being monitored closely. He is sensitive to drugs so is most likely the anaesthesia making him feel horrible.
Plan is now for Wednesday morning to stomach scope him and see if he has any stomach ulcers causing pain or any issues. Also he will have a full bandage change so we can see how his legs all look.
Thankyou everyone for all the support I will keep updating when I can
