My mother was diagnosed with Hepatitis C several years ago. The virus lay dormant in her blood for over 30 years and when discovered she had very few treatment options. A new drug called Harvoni had just surfaced and she was a candidate! However this drug was very expensive $1125 per pill and took quite a few hoops to jump through for APPROVAL. She was finally approved and took the medication for 12 weeks ($94,500) and was free of the virus!!! ****Of course insurance covered a portion of the medication and she only paid a percentage of the cost out of pocket.**** We thought things were getting better. But her liver disease progressed rapidly and she is now facing a transplant, but is waiting for approval for it. She has fluid accumulating on her abdomen called ascites from her liver not being able to filter her blood. This has caused a massive abdominal hernia that is the size of a basketball and is extremely painful. She has also developed an inguinal hernia from the fluid accumulation. She is following doctors orders and has a paracentesis done to drain fluid every few days and it accumulates again within hours. They are finally going through the motions of approving her for placement on the transplant list and she is currently hospitalized possibly facing a TIPSS procedure. The photo attached shows her abdominal hernia now and the collage is the physical progression of her liver disease within a couple short years. As you can imagine this has been incredibly expensive and will only get more so. If you can spare anything at all please do and if not please share this campaign. She does have insurance through her job at this time, but is obviously unable to work and is unsure how long she will be able to keep the insurance. Her financial counselor is saying they need to prepare for well over $250,000!!!!!! We are not ready to lose her!!!
