My name is Raul Escobar. I am from Venezuela and reside in New York. After years of complaining about the mismanagement and evident eagerness of the Venezuelan government’s attempt to starve their people to keep them both physically and emotionally weak, I’ve decided the time has come to help in any way I can, regardless of how small of a contribution it may be.
Venezuela is facing its worst crisis in every sector of its society. Food and medicine have become a luxury available only to the elites. Emergency rooms are filled with patients awaiting medical attention that may never come. And morgues are filled with bodies that were victims of the unimaginable crisis the country is facing.
People are emigrating to neighboring countries in search of food and/or medicines. Others are not so lucky, and do not have the opportunity to leave. For those, desperation and stress are at its highest level, and some have resorted to suicide. Imagine that, fathers and mothers so desperate in their efforts to find food for their children, they find no better option than suicide.
My goal is aimed at providing food. In Venezuela, minimum wage per month is around $2 (USD/monthly). To give a quick illustration, a couple of pounds of meat can cost around $1.50 (which is obviously not a month’s supply). Families would only have the remaining $.50 for all the other expenses that month. It’s simply impossible to sustain a family on this.
I have researched ways of importing food, but decided against it for two reasons: it’s too risky and it’s not economically efficient. The Venezuelan military controls all ports into the country, and would likely seize any food shipped. Then they would turn around and sell it to the people at exorbitant prices The military controls the food supply, and they obey the government’s orders.
I’ve concluded that the best way to aid people in Venezuela is to actually travel there, purchase the food and provide cooked meals. It may be in the form of soup kitchen or distributing it to the neediest people (most are children). So, by launching this campaign, I am asking for your help. A few dollars can have a lasting effect on many. Not only will it improve their nourishment, but it will fill their hearts and soul with joy and hope. Any monetary contribution is welcome,and I assure you it will have a tremendous impact. The funds will be spent on food purchase, preparation and distribution.
I thank you all beforehand for your contribution and goodwill to help people that you may never meet. Please be sure I will provide pictures when I put this event together and share with you all.
The plan will be to use the funds to purchase food (rice, beans, vegetables, proteins, fruits). The focal point will be Margarita Island (my place of origin) where I can ask the community for assistance in setting the event where food will be distributed to the most vulnerable people in that area. The goal is collect sufficient funds to duplicate this event in as many towns as possible. I have traveled there and seen first-hand how people are suffering primarily from malnutrition. Again, given the control the government has over every institution, it is not recommended to wire any funds. The best option is to travel there (at my own expense) with the funds in hand and proceed with the purchase of food to distribute.
