Malcolm X said, “the most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.”
Considering the current socio-political climate, it is evident in the way Black women are disrespected, unprotected and neglected all the time, from micro-aggressions in daily interactions to policies aimed to strip Black women of their humanity. In the workplace the opinions and safety - both physical and mental, of Black women is of little to no priority.
Recently, Fayola Perry, a Black woman, decided that she would not sit by as her job ignored her and several other co-workers who were triggered upon the discovery that their employer housed and shipped MAGA hats and other various paraphernalia associated with the hate groups and the Alt-Right. The items triggered feelings of fear in their workplace and subsequently affected the culture at their job. When asked why they - the employer chose to take on a client that sold these particular items that had been dropped by larger companies like Amazon, the company and its operations management, compared the items to dildos and ‘pink pussy hats’ worn by supporters of the Women’s March. When she challenged her workplace for the grossly oversimplified comparison, they said that if a client can pay the respective fees to ship and house their products, they will ship and house their product. The only restriction being explosives. They failed to understand explosives are not the only items that can make employees feel unsafe.
The company continued to ignore her concerns. When she took the story public she was terminated and has been blacklisted in the industry. The news spurred several clients of the eCommerce company to remove their products from their warehouse. While the story has gained media attention, Ms. Perry herself has faced a myriad of obstacles both legally and financially while trying to fight back and stand up for the mental well-being of warehouse workers. She’s no stranger to activism and has been actively fighting for immigrant rights as well as workers rights after a string of problematic work environments.
However vigilante she has managed to be, losing your primary source of income with other people depending on you is both physically and emotionally taxing. While Ms. Perry has been creative in maximizing her various skills to create income, she has faced crippling setbacks due to unforeseen legal repercussions as well as health concerns, both mental and physical. A few of her friends and mentors wanted to create a space where folks who wanted to help could donate. Please contribute whatever you are able to pay to for legal fees,sustenance and rebuilding her career.
